The Essex County Traffic Unit of the OPP is patrolling the new 11 kilometre stretch of the new Herb Gray Parkway that opened Sunday night.
OPP will be responsible for traffic enforcement and investigating all motor vehicle collisions that occur on the parkway.
Police want to remind the motoring public that even though the parkway is open for traffic, there is still construction taking place and they ask drivers to be conscious of construction workers and vehicles.
OPP also want the public to familiarize themselves with the new highway.
Even though the parkway is four lanes wide, the speed on most of it is 60 km/hr, which will be strictly enforced by officers.
Some of the on/off ramps are not open, so drivers should know where their exit is before leaving for their journey.
“The public can expect to see an enhanced presence by the OPP on this new section of Highway and I encourage everyone to continue to drive safely and responsibly,” says Glenn Miller, Detachment Commander for Essex County in a release.
The parkway is made up of three components – an extension of Highway 401, an extension of Highway 3 and the parkway trail network set within 120 hectares of green space.
Workers started putting out safety barrels Sunday night at 10 p.m.
