Windsor city councillor Percy Hatfield will seek the provincial NDP nomination in Windsor-Tecumseh.

He made the announcement on Friday with his family by his side.

"I'm in it to win it,” says Hatfield. “I'm in it to win the nomination and win the riding."

Hatfield says he wishes to run as the NDP candidate because he believes in party leader Andrea Horwath.

It's up to the provincial new democrats to set a date for a nomination meeting and so far one has not been called. In the meantime, Hatfield says he'll continue his work as Ward 7 councillor. He says he will remain as councillor unless he is elected as MPP.

“Howard McCurdy, Brian Masse, Mike Ray have all been city councillors and have all ran for nomination," says Hatfield.

A byelection has not yet been called in the riding after former Liberal MPP Dwight Duncan stepped down a month ago.

Former NDP candidate Andrew McAvoy announced earlier Friday will not be running this time.

“The time just isn't right now," says McAvoy.

McAvoy was 3,000 votes behind Duncan in the 2011 election.
