TORONTO - A 15-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a truck in northwest Toronto while headed to her first day of classes for the new school year.

Police say the incident happened just before 8 a.m. Tuesday (near Keele Street and Finch Avenue West.)

The truck driver remained on the scene and there's no immediate word if charges will be laid.

Toronto District School Board Director Donna Quan says the girl was a student at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate and was headed to her first day of classes.

Quan offered condolences to the family and the school community and said counsellors would be at the school to help support students and staff.

She says the board will work with schools to ensure safety rules are followed and encourage drivers to take care.
