Should the break wall in Leamington be removed? That will be the topic of discussion at an upcoming public meeting later this month.

The province is trying to determine what to do with Leamington’s breakwater. It’s the same location where three people died on June 5, 2011, when their boat slammed into the break wall late that night.

Alan Antoniuk was best friends with Andrew Comrie, one of the passengers aboard the boat during the tragic crash. He says the break wall should be torn down.

“Too many people had to die on that break wall,” Antoniuk says. “It should have been removed a long time ago.”

And he's not alone. The province, is recommending the removal of the break wall as the preferred course of action.

The break wall sits just off the coast of the Leamington Marina in Lake Erie. When it was installed in the 1950’s, the intent of the structure was to minimize wave action for commercial fishing.

The Town of Leamington wouldn’t comment on whether the break wall should stay or go, until they’ve seen all of the data from the Ministry of Transportation.

The public is invited to attend the meeting on Sept. 25, between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Marina Pavilion.
