Chatham-Kent council has approved funding to restore the downtown cenotaph, but it won't include repairs to fix a glaring spelling error.

Last November it came to the attention of staff that the word remembrance had been improperly spelled as "rememberance."

Counc. Michael Bondy tells CTV News that the heritage committee has decided to keep the error and instead clean the granite and above statue and reinstall some of the lead lettering on the World War I inscriptions.

Veterans Affairs Canada had come forward with more than $8,000 in funding that council had to match.
