A large freighter was stuck in Lake St. Clair overnight after running aground because of mechanical problems.

Lt. Justin Westmiller, public affairs officer with the U. S. Coast Guard, says the ship experienced trouble around 6 p.m. and the captain decided to pull over so they didn’t impede traffic on the waterway.

“This didn’t have anything to do with water levels, this was a mechanical issue,” says Westmiller. “This was a conscious decision by the captain.”

He says there were about 22 crew members on the Spruceglen. No one was injured and there was no damage to the freighter.

It is sitting about a mile offshore near Grosse Pointe, Mich. The U.S. Coast Guard was also on scene.

A tug from Detroit freed the vessel Wednesday afternoon.

He says this has happened before.

“As far as grounding go, we get a couple a year,” he says. “This is possibly the second one this year.”
