Aformer employee at Windsor International Airport has been charged after allegedly taking over $200,000 over three years.

On Feb. 9, 2016, the Windsor Police Financial Crime Unit was contacted by management of the airport in  regards to an employee who was allegedly responsible for taking airport funds.

The complainant advised that he became aware of the incident when he noticed inconsistencies in deposits made by the employee.

As a result of these findings they conducted an internal forensic audit and found a quantity of cash that was missing, say police.

On May 25, the findings were discussed and disclosed to investigators from the Financial Crime Branch.

Police say investigation revealed the employee allegedly took in excess of $200,000 over the course of 3 calendar years, beginning in April of 2013.

On Friday, June 10, the 54-year-old woman attended headquarters and was arrested.

The LaSalle woman is charged with theft over $5,000.

Mayor Drew Dilkens tells CTV News, they learned of the alleged fraud earlier this year, and they commenced an internal investigation.

He says when they discovered the alleged fraud, the employee was fired immediately. They then hired PwC to do a forensic audit.

When that concluded, the details were handed over to Windsor police. As a result, airport authorities have changed their financial practices, including hiring of part-time staff, to make sure that multiple employees handle cash transactions in the future.

The mayor says they are also filing a claim with their insurance company to recover the money alleged to have been stolen.

The accused was released on a promise to appear, with a court date of July 26.
