Windsor police used footprints in the snow to arrest a 35-year-old Windsor man for stealing items from parked vehicles.

Police were called to the 5400 block of Haig Ave around 2:30 a.m. Monday. A citizen reported hearing a car door slam on his driveway and seeing a suspect stealing a bag from his neighbours' vehicle.

Officers followed a single set of fresh footprints in the snow. They discovered the suspect was walking up and down driveways and stopping at parked vehicles in driveways and on the street in the neighbourhood.

The trail led officers to a man walking in the 2800 block of McMahon Avenue. Officers approached the man, who was evasive. Police say he matched the description of the suspect and had a black bag strung around his neck.

Officers say the footprints in the snow leading from vehicle to vehicle had the same pattern as the footprints in the snow that lead right up to the suspect.

The man was arrested for theft and possession of stolen property. A search revealed multiple items including several GPS units, wallet and identification, lighters and cigarettes. He also had tools.

Some of the items were returned to their rightful owners in the neighbourhood. Other items were itemized and stored at Windsor Police Headquarters.

Police say 10 vehicles may have been targeted. Anyone with missing items from their vehicle in the area can call police at (519)-255-6700 ex 4830.

Thomas Lesperance was charged with two counts of theft, two counts of possession of stolen property, breach of probation and possession of break and enter instruments.
