Windsor and Essex County is under its first cold weather alert this winter.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit has the alert for overnight Friday and overnight Saturday.

Based on the Environment Canada forecast, late night and early morning temperatures are predicted to be -15 Celsius or colder.

Extreme cold is characterized by temperatures far below normal. Individuals who are stranded and those without shelter are in immediate danger, as are individuals whose homes are poorly insulated or without heat.

The health unit says the most common health problems associated with exposure to extreme cold are hypothermia and frostbite. Warning signs and tips on how to avoid those conditions are available on the health unit’s website.
