Windsor fire officials are asking the public to stay away from the former Windsor Raceway after a massive fire has made the area unsafe.

Firefighters were called to the blaze around 4:45 a.m. Flames fully engulfed the structure and thick smoke billowed from the area.

Crews were still dousing hotspots and working with heavy equipment on Thursday morning. The fire was supressed by the afternoon, but officials say the site is considered unsafe.

The building was in the process of being demolished before the fire broke out.

The company doing the demolition, Jones Group Ltd., put out a brief news release Thursday encouraging anyone with information to contact the Windsor police arson squad at (519)255-6700 ext 4333 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at (519)258-TIPS or (519)258-8477 on the web at www.catchcrooks.com.

Windsor police were also called to the site after an excavator was stolen on Sunday.

The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
