It was a big announcement Saturday regarding the future of the Paul Martin Building in Windsor.
Essex Conservative MP Jeff Watson says the government will sell the property to the city of Windsor for $1 in the hopes it will eventually become the new law building for the University of Windsor.
"The $1 value I think recognizes the federal government for what will ultimalty be the repurposing into a law faculty is donating the value of the facade repair," says Watson.
Back in May, Watson announced that Ottawa would commit $6 million to repair the exterior facade of the five-storey building.
Officials say that construction will still go ahead.
The building has been surrounded by scaffolding since 2009 to protect people from falling limestone.
Watson says divesting the asset required Treasury Board approval.
Mayor Drew Dilkens says a new law school would bring about 450 students into the downtown core but it's not a done deal just yet.
"We're still working with the University of Windsor and the board of governors will need to work the deal out. But this is a critical step in the process to be able to have the government agree to give us the building for a dollar so we can actually further the conversation," says Dilkens.
