A Windsor family is turning to the public for help to change restrictions to organ donations, all in memory of their late son.

Rocky Campana was 23 years old when he took his own life last August. He was in hospital for two days before he was taken off of life support.

Rocky agreed to be an organ donor, but none of his organs were used after his death.

His family believes it's because Rocky was gay. In 2007, Health Canada made changes to organ donations, including listing sexually active gay men as high risk and determining they could no longer be accepted as organ donors.

Now the Campana family is trying to change that. Sunday marks the first annual Run for Rocky with more than 1,000 people expected to be on hand to run or walk five kilometres.

As well as being a fundraising event it will give participants and supporters a chance to sign a petition supporting changes to the organ donation policy.

According to the Trillium Gift of Life network there are approximately 1,500 people waiting for an organ transplant in Ontario.
