In the aftermath of a fatal collision that killed a 16-year-old Harrow teen, Essex town council is looking to improve County Road 50.

During Monday night’s meeting, town council approved spending for 2015, including the widening of the roadway’s shoulders.

Councillor Bill Baker says council submitted an application as part of the county wide active transportation system to extend planned work further west at a cost of $280,000.

“It’s an important safety issue and that's why we're moving forward on it," Baker says.

Baker’s intention is to fast-track the project and is hopeful future council will consider adding bike lanes to that area by 2016.

"We have to go through species at risk studies because of low lying areas,” Bakers says. “What I did suggest is that we accelerate those plans because, while species are important, I don't want species to take precedence over human life."

The move to extend the shoulders comes after a fatal collision claimed the life of Andrew Gyorgy. The Harrow teen was struck by a vehicle while pushing his dirt bike along County Road 50 on May 30
