Things are returning to normal as OPP reopened Highway 401 between Windsor and Tilbury Wednesday night

Police decided to close the section because of blowing and drifting snow causing whiteout conditions.

Essex OPP say their officers responded to 57 motor vehicle collisions in the county from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm Wednesday.

Windsor police report they contended with 37 collisions by midnight.

Earlier in the day emergency crews closed down a section of 401 between Provincial Road and Howard Avenue for a period of time after a tractor trailer jackknifed at the Highway 3 roundabout.

Meanwhile, Chatham-Kent Provincial Police are investigating an eight-vehicle pileup on the westbound lanes of the 401 near Drake Side Road.

Windsor snow plow operators have had a busy night clearing main thoroughfares and turning their attention to residential side streets trying to keep ahead of the morning commute.

Despite snow clearing efforts and improved driving conditions, police remind motorists to take their time as roads may still have slippery sections.
