Members of the LHIN board unanimously agreed the risk of losing obstetric services at Leamington District Memorial Hospital was unacceptable.

They listened to the findings of a report, with about 100 members of the community, at a public meeting Tuesday evening in Leamington.

However, there is still no proposed funding model to keep the service going.

Panel member, Bonnie Adamson, said the key to the idea is what is called a navigation centre, where a health care professional would be on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The professional would help moms from conception to post-partum as a means of knowing when the unit is needed and when it’s not.

The proposal is meant to save money, but it’s not known how much.

The board also listened to questions from the community.

Board members decided to move forward with the proposed decision, but want more detailed financial information in the next 30 days.

People who attended the meeting seemed cautiously optimistic.

The LHIN is still accepting written submissions for 30 days after the meeting.
