Environment Canada has ended a weather advisory for Windsor and Essex County.

A weather advisory was in effect Wednesday afternoon as Environment Canada said funnel clouds were possible.

The forecaster said a few funnel clouds were been reported over Southern Essex county from OPP, associated with thunderstorms near Oxley.

The storms were moving eastward or southeastward along the shoreline and may cross Point Pelee or Pelee Island near 4:30 p.m.

Environment Canada says the storms are expected to move southeastward into Lake Erie by this evening.

These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado, says the forecaster.

If conditions become more favourable for the development of landspout tornadoes, Environment Canada says watches and warnings will be issued.

Treat any funnel cloud sighting seriously. Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter. Environment Canada says these funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.
