Windsor city council is being asked to consider a new idea to combat panhandling in the downtown streets.

Care meters are refurbished and redesigned parking meters that collect people's change for agencies that support the homeless.

The Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association is asking city council to provide seven meters, and allow them to be placed in the 200 and 300 blocks of Ouellette Avenue.

The idea is that people will give their spare change to the meter instead of the people asking for it on the street.

DWBIA chair Larry Horwitz says he believes the meters will be a great way to beautify the downtown, while alleviating panhandling and helping local charities.

The matter goes before city council Monday night.
