The City of Detroit has denied an application to store a coal-based byproduct along the riverfront.

Waterfront Holdings requested a permit to store hundreds of thousands of tonnes of coke breeze - along with other materials like gravel - not far from historic Fort Wayne.

Unlike petcoke which is petroleum based - coke breeze is a fine power used in iron processing.

Some agencies like u-s based national institutes of health site coke breeze as a carcinogen.

The city's denial was based on public health concerns.

A legal representative for the property owners intends to appeal - saying the findings were contrary to recommendation of the planning department which approved the request.
