Windsor city council is looking at a proposal to sell alcohol at the city’s aquatic centre and waterpark.

Administration is recommending that council approve the issuance of a Request For Proposals for a full service concession, including liquor licensing approval, at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre and Adventure Bay Family Water Park.

“Having the ability to provide a room rental option that includes food and alcohol would assist in continuing to promote the venue as a high-quality meeting and event location,” said the report.

Executive director of recreation and culture Jan Wilson says “this is a really different operation, so we wanted to look at having a different kind of concession service here."

The city says several other Ontario waterparks provide the option of purchasing alcohol.

Some waterparks with alcohol include Kalahari, the Great Wolf Lodge, Fallsview Waterpark, and Typhoon Lagoon at Disney.

As of right now, no alcohol is allowed at Adventure Bay, but Wilson says the idea stems from the city listening to customers.

“We wanted to look at what do other waterparks do in their food service,” says Wilson. “They offer a waterpark feature that allow parents to have a drink while interacting with their children at the waterpark."

The report says there are also risks involved in introducing the service of alcohol.

Administration says these risks are mitigated by establishing designated areas for consumption and ensuring that alcohol is being sold and dispensed in accordance with AGCO legislation by Smart Serve Ontario certified staff.

Council will discuss the topic at the meeting on Sept. 6.
