The west end pool that was destined for closure will remain open for another year at a cost of nearly $500,000.

The future of the Adie Know has been in question since 2011 when council identified savings by closing a number of city pools. The money was thought to be needed to help support the downtown Aquatic Centre.

The community responded with a petition of thousands of signatures to save the community pool. Ward Two councillor, Ron Jones says support came from beyond the local neighbourhood.

“Members of city council were very well aware that the people, whether they’re from the county or the far east side, were interested in keeping that pool open," he says.

However, according to Parks and Recreation Executive Director, Jan Wilson, the need for program space has increased with the popularity of swimming jumping 26 per cent.

Wilson says the changes in programming will take place starting this September on the City of Windsor Activity Guide website.

Still, Wilson points out what will happen to the pool beyond December 2015 will be a decision for the next city council.
