BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Contract talks for 3,000 registered nurses and other health professionals at 168 nursing homes in Ontario are going to arbitration.

Ontario Nurses Association president Linda Haslam-Stroud says mediation between her group and negotiators with the homes has ended over what she says is the employers' demand to reduce staffing at the facilities.

She says the for-profit homes' owners won't return to the table without an agreement that allows them to cut registered nursing staff.

The two sides will head to arbitration on Oct. 22 and 23.

The association represents registered nurses, registered practical nurses, personal support workers and other allied health professionals at the nursing homes.
