City of Windsor officials are celebrating the official groundbreaking marking the beginning of construction for a new $6.4 million pool in the east end.

The 25-metre indoor community pool will be an addition to Windsor's WFCU Centre. It will feature a splash pad, therapy pool and a six-lane competitive pool, as well as a built-in wheelchair ramp to access both pools.

DeAngelis Construction will begin construction this week.

The pool will initially be a warm-up facility for the 2016 FINA World Championships in December 2016. The main event will be staged in a larger temporary pool inside the WFCU’s main bowl.

The warm-up pool will remain afterward as a legacy piece for the community.

Construction is expected to be complete by August 2016.
