The potential existence of a species at risk has delayed the building of the new south Windsor fire hall.

A tender to build the new Fire Hall Number Five has been cancelled, pending a species at risk assessment.

The assessment was ordered by the Ministry of Natural Resources because of a Butler Garter Snake under the species at risk act.

City engineer Mario Sonego says this could delay construction by at least a few months.

The city found out about the issue a month ago, and is still in contact with the ministry before starting the study

Despite the delay, the city believes it will stay within its $9-million budget for two new fire halls.
