Windsor Regional Hospital is moving forward with developing a new space for dialysis patients.
Construction is ready to begin inside the former Bell building on Goyeau Ave. Officials say it will create a more comfortable and accessible environment for patients who currently receive their treatment.
The renovation will allow an expansion from 22 dialysis stations currently located at the Ouellette Campus to 30 dialysis stations in the Bell building.
The contract to renovate a vacant space in the building at 1149 Goyeau Ave. was awarded to DeAngelis Construction.
Construction is set to begin by March 1 and is expected to be finished within 10 to 12 months.
The project is funded through the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, which gave approval for the project last summer. It was approved as part of the overall planning for the single site acute care hospital and the realignment of regional services.
Officials say services will continue at this location even after the full Windsor-Essex hospitals project is fully implemented.
Staff will have more space to work within and the site is expected to better accommodate equipment needs. Patients will have better access to the services with adjacent free parking of up to 40 spaces.
WRH’s Regional Renal Program currently serves over 400 renal patients. In 2014-2015, the Regional Renal Program completed 43,052 treatments for hemodialysis patients in Windsor-Essex.
