Blood stains and shattered concrete remain untouched at the scene of a serious collision that sent a 35-year-old mother and her 14-year-old daughter to hospital.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Windsor police say the two females were walking on the west sidewalk southbound near Victoria Avenue and Elliot Street when they were hit by a black Mazda.

"The young girl was lying straight down on the ground of course she was scared calling for her mom,” says Jana Obradovic, who was nearby. “Her mother was trying to console her, but she was injured herself."

The victims were received significant injuries and were in bad shape when police arrived. The mother required reconstructive surgery to her right upper and lower leg and a crush injury to her left foot. She is listed in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries at Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital.

The 14-year-old girl suffered a lacerated liver. She is listed in critical, but stable condition and was airlifted to a London hospital because of the extent of her injuries.

"Even now, I can't get those screams out of my head," says Obradovic.

The Mazda was turning from Elliot Street west onto Victoria when it accelerated quickly and left the roadway. Police say the car went over the sidewalk and struck the victims straight on the front of the vehicle.

The Mazda continued and struck a brick retaining wall that was adjacent to a driveway. The victims were thrown onto the driveway.

"I pray that it looked worse than it is, and they come out of this healthy," says Obradovic.

Windsor police say the driver and passenger of the vehicle fled the area on foot, running north on Victoria Avenue.

Both men, 20, returned to the scene a short time later, telling police they fled because they were scared. They were placed under arrest in relation to the accident. The investigation is continuing.
