The Windsor Essex County Health Unit has issued a cold weather alert for the region that will be in effect until Friday.

The health unit in Chatham-Kent has also issued a cold weather alert.

Based on the Environment Canada forecast, temperatures are predicted to dip to -17°C overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning and -15°C Thursday overnight into Friday morning.

People who are stranded and those without shelter are in immediate danger, as are individuals whose homes are poorly insulated or without heat.

The most common health problems associated with exposure to extreme cold are hypothermia and frostbite. Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it is produced.
