The cafeteria at General Brock Public School has been closed due to a cockroach outbreak.

The pests were noticed when students returned to the west-end school this year, according to Scott Scantlebury, a spokesperson for The Greater Essex County School Board.

The outbreak is isolated to the ground level cafeteria, says Scantlebury.

According to pest control professionals, the outbreak was caused by food that was left over during summer programs.

The cafeteria has been closed and all programming, including the breakfast program, have been moved elsewhere in the school.

In the short term, the school will begin mitigation measures – such as disposing of garbage immediately.

A contractor has been obtained to eradicate the pests in a humane fashion, says Scantlebury.
