Organizers of a major Windsor area coat drive say they are struggling to get donations this year.

The Coats for Kids campaign has collected hundreds of coats so far, but they are in need of thousands.

"I'm very nervous about not having enough, because we kick off early," says Debbi Desjardins, Coats for Kids coordinator.

From now until Oct. 30 organizers hope to collect and clean over 5,000 winter coats for children in need in the Windsor and Essex County area.

Organizers believe the warm start to October is to blame for low donations.

“The beginning of October was so beautiful, people don't think to go through their closets and their winter stuff," says Desjardins.

Members of the community can drop coats off at participating dry cleaners in the area.

"Dry cleaners finish on Oct. 30th, so we've got a real rush," says Desjardins.

The plan is to have coats ready for distribution by Nov. 2. There are several distribution sites in Windsor and Essex County.

The campaign, run by the Unemployed Help Centre, collected 6,000 coats in last year.
