Many residents, hydro crews and city workers are cleaning up Tuesday after extreme winds swept through Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

Wind gusts took down trees, fences, and power lines across the region. Environment Canada predicted wind speeds up to 100 kilometres per hour in some areas on Monday.

Hydro One reported 400 outages across Ontario, affecting 87,000 customers. Thousands of customers still didn’t have power Tuesday, but most were expected to be back on line by the end of the day.

A number of hydro poles were knocked down along Merlin Line in Chatham-Kent. Hydro One crews were replacing seven poles in the area. Merlin Public School was closed because of the outage.
