A Chatham man has begun serving a nine-year sentence for the 1987 murder of his wife.

George Jarvis was charged with first degree murder about a year ago when investigators reopened the case in 2013.

The 55-year-old later plead guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced in a Chatham courthouse yesterday.

Donna Jarvis was 22 years old when she was shot and killed in her home 30 years ago.

At the time, her husband said his firearm accidentally discharged while he was cleaning it.

However, police reopened the case after reports Jarvis was telling people it wasn't an accident.

His lawyer Ken Marely was hoping for a conditional sentenced, saying his client has mental health difficulties.
