There are safety concerns in Chatham-Kent.

Many parents are upset at a decision by council to get rid of municipal crossing guards.

They are being replaced with new pedestrian crossing lights, but some parents and safety experts believe that's not enough to keep their children safe.

After a multi-year review, council decided to stop paying for 12 adult crossing guards on Dec. 1.

Instead, council will pay for pedestrian crossovers, similar to crosswalks. However they won't be ready until the spring.

“I'm sure it's not malicious by anyone going through a cross walk without looking but it's not safe for kids if they don't have good judgment on if a car is going to stop or not," says Julianne Saunders.

The Chatham-Kent Safety Village is also concerned, especially since it will be about five months before the cross over lights are installed.

Executive director Barb Lovell hopes the municipality and school board can find another solution.

"We have high unemployment in the area and a senior population and I'm sure through some improvements in programing I'm sure it could be more attractive," says Lovell.
