A Chatham woman is a finalist in a Royal Canadian Mint competition.

Kathrine Moon's design was picked out of thousands and could grace Canadian coinage commemorating Canada's 150th birthday.

She doesn't call herself an artist, Moon likes to draw a lot and all her doodling has paid off.

“I was told I was a finalist and I just wanted to scream it from rooftops,” says Moon.

Her coin design is one of 25 finalists across the country, chosen from 10,000 submissions.

Her design could ultimately be minted and the coin circulated as part of Canada's 150th anniversary.

“That would be amazing,” says Moon. “I think it would be highlight of my life so far.”

“To have your design featured on millions of coins, in pockets of Canadians, circulating across Canada, that’s a really rare opportunity we offer Canadians,” says Christine Aquino, director of communications for the Mint.

The My Canada, My Inspiration contest is an opportunity for Canadians to express their own sentiments about Canada, beyond the traditional symbols of maple leaves and beavers.  The winning designs will cover five new coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2017.

“I call it once in a generation, once every 25 years,” says Aquino. “We did it for the millennium. This is first time in many years we've done this.”

Moon's design is called "Farmers, Our Lifeline."

“When you get down to the bottom of it, everything you eat or drink in a day comes from a farmer, been touched by a farmers hand,” says Moon.

In this contest, it's not just about the design but also, the story behind it.

“Canadians are very proud about experiences they've had,” says Aquino. “That's the interesting part, is the story behind it.

Moon's is one many people in this region can relate to.

The 58-year-old grew up in Merlin, a small town outside of Chatham. Her childhood memories include time spent working on the farmpicking beans.

The contest closes Oct. 9. Until then, you can vote as often as you like for your favourite coin design in each of the five categories.

The more you vote, the more you increase the chances of seeing your favourite designs on the 2017 coins and Moon is asking you to support her, the only local finalist.
