The City of Windsor is introducing new technology to keep motorists moving.

New traffic cameras will be installed on major intersections. As part of Windsor's enhanced capital budget passed Monday evening, $2 million was set aside to buy the devices.

The cameras are able to sense when a car is present and will switch the light accordingly. It is expected to reduce the amount of time a car will sit at a red light with no cross traffic.

City officials hope it will improve traffic flow, reduce emissions from idling cars and cut travel times considerably.

Dougall, Howard, Walker, Tecumseh and Wyandotte will be the first roadways to get video detection monitors.

There are 25 cameras already deployed at major Windsor intersections. The cameras cost about $3,000 each.

About 133 new cameras will be added this year and early next year.
