The Town of Tecumseh has become the third municipality in Essex County to adopt a smoking ban.

At Tuesday night’s town council meeting, councillors approved a new bylaw, effectively banning smoking at all municipally owned recreation facilities and parks.

Tecumseh now joins Lakeshore and Leamington as municipalities who have introduced a smoking ban. However, Tecumseh’s is a little broader. Instead of introducing a specific measurement – for example standing nine feet from a soccer field before lighting up – the town decided to implement a total ban.

“I think it’s all about the protection of the children. They need a safe enjoyable safe to play and not be exposed to second hand smoke,” says director of parks and recreation, Paul Anthony.

Smoking within parking lots will be allowed.

The ban will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2015.
