Community Housing Corporation workers are checking on seniors after the elevators stopped working properly in a downtown Windsor high-rise residential complex.

Residents say the elevators have been on and off at Raymond Desmarais Manor at 255 Riverside Dr. since around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night.

The building is run by the Windsor and Essex Community Housing Corporation.

Public affairs manager Kari Schofield says there are about nine CHC workers going through the hallways checking on seniors.

Some of the residents, who are elderly and restricted to wheelchairs and walkers, depend on the elevator.

Schofield isn’t sure how long it’ll be before the elevators return to service. She says an electric contractor is looking into the situation. She believes it might be a fuse.

Schofield is concerned with those residents who have important medical appointments. She says if necessary, she’ll call on other agencies to help the residents who need urgent care.

The building is about 40 years old.
