The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario is working with Windsor police after an 18-year-old was charged with sexual assault for two alleged incidents in Windsor bars.

Windsor Spitfires forward Ben Johnson spent a night in jail and was released on $30,000 bail Tuesday in relation to alleged assaults at The Krooked Kilt and Mynt.

A 20-year-old woman alleged she was sexually assaulted three weeks ago at the The Krooked Kilt. A 16-year-old girl alleged she was sexually assaulted at Mynt early Monday morning.

“We are aware of these alleged incidents and we are carrying out an investigation in cooperation with the Windsor police,” says AGCO spokesperson Lisa Murray.

Murray says it is similar to a police investigation.

“The investigation enforcement division at the AGCO is actually a bureau of the OPP,” says Murray. “So it would be OPP along with civilian inspectors who would be carrying out this investigation. It would be similar to the sort of information they would be looking at in a police investigation.”

The commission isn’t involved in criminal charges, but the organization is responsible for the status of an establishment’s liquor license.

Mynt has been licenced for about a year and The Krooked Kilt has been licenced for about a year and a half. Murray says neither place has served a suspension or paid a monetary penalty.

It is a business decision of the individual establishment whether or not it wants to allow patrons in who are under the legal drinking age, says Murray.

“That usually happens where it is pretty predictable based on the type of establishment, the model, location, clientele, that minors are going to try to buy alcohol,” she says. “They have to take steps to ensure minors don’t buy alcohol.”
