Atkinson Park is a place for the community, by the community.

A group of senior volunteers  is the lifeblood of the park.

Every year, they sponsor 100 kids who learn to swim at the park.

What first started as a swimming pool upgrade 15 years ago has turned into a facility that makes even those who made it happen feel humbled.

Now the Friends For Atkinson Park have another dream.

We want a splash pad, we want BBQs. We've got a big wish list,” says the women who started the group 15 years ago, Marilyn Woodison, 75.

“This is our park. This belongs to the community. It's doesn't belong to the city. You may own the land, but you don’t own the park".

"The Friends for Atkinson Park raised $175,000 and built a skate park in 2005. They say the next item on their list is to build a skateboard bowl.

On Saturday, the park was used for a regional skateboarding competition.
