Windsor fire officials say a blaze in the 700 block of Assumption Street Tuesday night caused $175,000 in damages.

Windsor police morality officers on patrol say they smelled smoke coming from the 700 block of Assumption Street around 9:30 p.m.  The officers searched for the source of the smoke and found a small amount of people standing by a residence at 747 Assumption St.

Citizens at the scene told officers that there may be people in the basement.  The officers kicked in the front door and yelled inside.  They were forced out by the intensity of the smoke inside.

The officers went to the back of the house and saw flames coming from the basement.  Officers secured the area as Windsor fire crews arrived to battle the blaze.

Fierce flames could be seen coming from the rear roof of the house, with billows of black smoke covering the street. Officials called in additional vehicles to aid in relief efforts, including an aerial truck.

Bystanders on the scene, including media, were pushed back because of the intense water pressure in the hoses used by the aerial truck.

Officers say they later learned no one was inside the house at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported.
