It wasn’t unanimous, but town councillors voted to keep Amherstburg’s shares in Essex Power during a meeting on Tuesday night.

By a vote of four to three, councillors rejected an offer to sell its control to Entegrus. The Chatham-based electric distributor offered the town $12 million for the shares.

Mayor Wayne Hurst, John Sutton and Bob Pillon wanted to sell the shares.

Town Council debated this idea as one way of balancing their books.

Amherstburg is in budget talks dealing with $38 million in debt.

The town’s proposed tax increase now stands at 3.8 per cent, which has been whittled down from more than the 10 per cent when deliberations began.

Budget talks resume on Friday.
