Amherstburg councillors approved combined grants of $27,500 at its regular meeting Monday night and a special budget meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.

Officials explain the amount adds a marginal increase to the 2015 budget.

However, with council weighing a 9.26 per cent property tax increase, even the smallest expenses are being scrutinized.

The expense was approved as a pre-commitment to the budget, which still needs to pass.

Holly Kirk McLean from the House of Shalom was pleased saying the funding will help keep the doors open to the youth centre. “Reducing my hours is not an option. That’s a commitment I've made to these kids."

The town wrapped up its series of four budget meetings with the general public on Saturday.

It was meant to explain the tax increase and funding cuts.

The proposed cuts include the elimination of $10,000 to the Windsor Parade Corporation which uses the money to hold the Santa Clause Parade.

Maggie Durocher says her group was the only one to be singled out from the tourism budget. “It’s extremely disappointing to us.”
