You may have noticed a slick looking navy ship on the GM Riverwalk.

It's the USS Detroit - a littoral combat ship that will be commissioned on Saturday before it makes its way to Windsor.

Commanding Officer Mike Desmond tells CTV Windsor the ship is designed to work in shallow waters and operate with agility and “capable of speeds up to 40 knots.”

Desmond adds "the ship is displaced at about 3,300 tons and it has up to 100 sailors embarked at any one time."

The USS Detroit is the fourth variant ship in the LCS class – joining the USS Milwaukee, USS Fort Worth and USS Freedom.

In fact, it’s the sixth ship to bear the City’s name.

Desmond points out these LCS ships can perform a number of different missions – from “surface warfare to mine or anti-submarine warfare."

It took more than three years to build the 389 foot vessel.

The order to bring the ship to life will be given by Barbara Levin, the wife of former Michigan Senator Carl Levin.
