The media first got its chance, now the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) is open to the public.

Over 850,000 people are expected to pass through Cobo Centre over the next two weeks to check out the latest and most innovative vehicles both on and off the market.

From luxury cars to every day practical vehicles, there's something for everyone.

Ken Evancic drove five hours from Kentucky to check out his favourite car.

"I've never been in a Porsche my entire life," he beams.

The last time he was at this auto show was 35 years ago. He says it brings him back to his childhood when his dad used to work at ford in Detroit.

"I've picked and chose the cars I want to buy if I win the lottery and this is definitely one of my top 5," Evancic says with a smile.

Earlier this week, the Ford F-150 was awarded Truck of the Year and the Volkswagen GTI took top prize for Car of the Year.

Now in its 27th year as an international event, the show provides unparalleled access to the automotive products, people and ideas that matter most - up close and in one spot.

Cobo Center underwent a $300 million renovation to ensure the city has a world class facility suitable for a world class show. It features a three-story, glass-enclosed riverfront atrium and a grand riverview ballroom.

New carpeting, lighting and additional gathering spaces in the concourse have been added to the venue.

A new outdoor digital screen at the corner of Washington and Congress provides the outside world an inside view of the show.

The NAIAS runs until January 25th.
