U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Detroit Windsor Tunnel stopped a 12-year-old female runaway on board the tunnel bus late Sunday night.

Officers conducting an inspection of the tunnel bus encountered the girl with no documents, traveling alone.

When officers questioned her, they discovered that she was a possible runaway.

Coordination with Windsor police confirmed that she had indeed, ran away from home.

“Working together during incidents such as this shows how local and federal agencies are able to coordinate efforts to locate runaways,” said David Beculheimer, acting port director. “CBP officers in Detroit, together with the CBSA and officers from the Windsor Police Department, were able to locate this missing juvenile and get her home safely.

The minor was reunited with her mother in Windsor with the assistance of Canada Border Services Agency and Windsor police.
